Intimacy, unreserved, open...to clarify what true intimacy is, imagine being able to have a conversation with another person without reservations...without any hidden agendas...without any fear.
Some like to believe they carry on such conversations every day, yet it grows more and more rare the older the individuals are. This isn't only a schoolyard phenomenon.
A simple question as to how another is feeling will elicit a response based upon:
1. Who they are talking to
2. Who is in ear shot
3. Where the conversation is taking place, and
4. What the occasion is.
Many boast, even revel in the fact that they are "real." This merely means they know how to be unpleasant, unkind, cantankerous and vulgar. It also usually means they are all of these (and more) relatively all of the time. It is extremely rare to find a "real" person to be spontaneously generous with gratitude, gifts, humility or compassion.
Granted, as human beings, accepting God's grace and saved by the same or, as rebellious and unbelieving of God and His benevolence...we are all capable of behaving either as the world does or as God desires; thanks to the assistance of the Holy Spirit. (Yes, even the unbelieving, un-saved can behave with gentleness and kindness, through God's benevolent common grace.)
Yet none of us are able to live as God desires perfectly, which would be to the point of full, unreserved intimacy with everyone...until we ourselves have been perfected; body and spirit.
It wouldn't matter if another were to be completely trustworthy, honest, upfront and open...part of me would probably hold back, even unintentionally because part of me would be suspicious and waiting for the other shoe to drop.
I don't know about the rest of the world, but I cannot wait for the true intimacy waiting for us in heaven: Communication without reservation (or corruption...these do tend to go hand in hand). Adam and Eve had it in the Garden, and we can have it right here with God...well, as soon as we confess that one sin we've been holding back...you know the one...
