Is it odd to quote this song for New Year’s? Not for me. My desire…wish…resolution every year has become a true prayer and because it became a true prayer it has become one that has been answered again and again throughout this past year the most in all my years.
God has been more obviously present in my life…my every day, every waking moment life this past year because I have been more consciously aware and more intentional in seeking Him every day, every hour, and every waking moment.
How? What is my secret, one may ask?
1. I have desired His presence. True, I have desired His presence always…yet always in my obsessive, sinful, self-seeking, it’s all about me, selfish way. Truly, even when I have believed and thought I was doing it His way and for Him, there was always something in it for me…even when I didn’t realize it, as it was hidden deep down, within my heart. And, if we believe God’s Word, you know what it says in Jeremiah 17:9:
“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?”
2.To truly desire His presence I have been in His Word.Again, I have read His Word…“perused” it throughout the years.
Reading yet not understanding. Every now and again doing a study by someone and truly gleaning something wonderful out of the message for me. And actually had read through the entire book a couple of times…but until this past year never truly devouring the book seeking His intent rather than my wishes for His intent. This year, even prior to reading an excellent book about reading God’s Word, God was showing me to look for HIM and WHO HE is, rather than to look for “what’s in it for me”. Yet, what, or rather Who is the Word of God? In John 1:1 it says:
“In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.”
3. In truly wanting to serve Him rather than have Him serve me, I have sought Him in prayer. Not in a bellhop, demanding give me this sort of prayer, but in a humble, how could You save a wretch like me, how awesome You are, You are so wonderful and gracious and awe-inspiring and worthy and thank You for everything praising kind of prayer. Such as in Matthew 6:
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven…”
May our New Year be a year of joy and growth in the LORD.
May any remembrance of 2016 be of where God had guided and protected.
May any failings remembered only encourage one to look to God for strength and guidance in 2017.
